Ten Years for Craigslist Pedophile, Illinois Sex Offender Registry

Under the terms of a plea bargain between himself and the State's Attorney's office, Brandon J. Bergthold, 25, of the Frankfort Square area of Will County, will spend at least the next five years in prison and up to ten years total, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. According to the Sun-Times, Bergthold placed an ad on Craigslist seeking "fathers willing to share their daughters." He was caught in a sting operation.

An undercover officer working in the Cook County Sheriff's Child Exploitation Unit posed as a father of a six-year-old girl. After two months of back and forth over the Internet, Bergthold began to push aggressively for a meeting. Worried that he might seek out another victim, the police set up a meeting immediately and arrested Bergthold.

If thoughts of no one could be that stupid and he sounds like he wanted to get caught are running through your head, you are probably right. Though we should never underestimate the stupidity of a criminal, Bergthold not only set up an obvious ad that got him caught, but he admitted to everything when arrested. It almost sounds like he wanted to be caught and knew that his behavior was escalating.

He also told the police that he was addicted to child porn and allowed them to search his computer for it. Hopefully, they can use the data on the computer to trace back the source of the porn and arrest even more pedophiles.

Brandon Bergthold will get credit for 146 days served in jail. Upon his release, and for the rest of his life, he will have to register as a sex offender. Megan's Law registries track the addresses and employers of sex offenders so that parents can protect their children.

The Illinois Sex Offender Registry contains a database of offenders and can even map their locations in your neighborhood.
