Twenty-year-old Emmanuel Perez-Gomez was ordered to be held on a $3 million bond after he was arrested following an altercation with police, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Police took Mr. Perez-Gomez into custody after he checked himself into Swedish Covenant Hospital for a gunshot wound.
He faces three felony counts of attempted murder, three counts of felony aggravated discharge of a firearm and one misdemeanor count of aggravated assault, according to sources.
A Chicago criminal defense attorney would tell you that the charges against Mr. Perez-Gomez are pretty serious.
The incident began with an argument in the North Side West Ridge neighborhood, after which Mr. Perez-Gomez allegedly shot three or four rounds at an SUV, according to a police report cited in the article. None of the three occupants of the vehicle were injured.
Upon hearing the shots, an off-duty officer chased the gunman; who allegedly pointed his gun at him. The officer fired at Mr. Perez-Gomez out of fear for his life, hitting him, according to the report cited by the Sun-Times. The officer then reportedly fled in a dark-colored SUV.
Mr. Perez-Gomez was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and ironically, helped police track the officer down. Police reportedly had no leads other than the description of his vehicle, but Mr. Perez-Gomez told emergency room workers where we was shot and they contacted police.
